Should state funded financial aid and access to California's public universities and colleges be available to undocumented immigrants?

  1. I believe that in order for illegal immigrants to receive fundings their needs to be a system to even out distributions to citizens and non citizens in order give everyone the chance to recieve a higher education.

  2. Immigrants should receive fundings because they come from and learn things the hard way so I think the govt. must help them so they can receive a higher education.

  3. I think they should be allowed to receive fundings because they are here to learn as well as other students. But i agree funding should evenly be distributed amoung udocumented and documented students. That way undocumented students dont receive more then documented students.

  4. As I support all the undocumented students that want to continue their education, I do believe that "The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us."(LA Times par. 6) For many citizens that don’t approve of undocumented students getting a higher education is really sad. Why? Because, many students do come to the USA for an opportunity or even then they’ve been here since they were kids and should be seen as citizens. As I read I came to a line that caught my attention “Undocumented students shouldn’t be excluded because of the way they look, or where they come from we should all be treated with equality and as people say treat someone the way that you would like to be treated.” It caught my attention because undocumented students just want to graduate with a degree in whatever they’re interested and also them being denied financial aid is like “having a wall in front of you preventing you to keep on going".

  5. I believe that every student should have an opportunity to receive some sort of state funded aid. It shouldn't matter whether they have legal documentation, because they are trying to achieve a better life for themselves. These undocumented students are looking for a better future like many of their colleagues, the only difference is most of their friends have documentation. Aren't we known for the "American Dream" and as "The Land of Opportunity?"

Many question whether we should give out money to undocumented students, after all we are in a financial crisis. According to the article, “California Passes Dream Act” by LA Times, the author explains Governor Brown's reasons to signing the bill. One of the reasons was to better California's future, by signing this bill governor brown is investing in these undocumented students who in the future will contribute to California economically. Therefore Governor Brown is focusing in making sure California has a stable future ahead by helping these undocumented students. So let these undocumented students achieve their dreams and lets prove to them that this is "The Land of Opportunity."

  6. In my opinion it is very important for undoccumented immigrants to be granted state funded aid. An education is expensive let alone all the struggles we have to go through in order to obtain a college degree. Immigrants are not criminals and there is no reason why they should be treated as if they were. We are talking about students whos strive to be the best to recieve the A rather than the B. Undoccumented students deserve a right to an eduacation. If they were able to demonstrate high intellectual skills through out high school as Govenor Brown mentioned they should have the opportunity to go to college and recieve state aid.

They have every rightin the essay "Dream Act" states that these students are required to go through a procees in order to become citizens. Which is a great point, students must be in the process of becoming citizens so that they can attend college and recieve aid. An argument that has been resolved these students are more likely to succeed and become citizens. By becoming citizens they can later contribute by paying taxes. So, why shouldn't they be granted state aid it is an opportunity to an education,to our future leaders of tommorow. If in all other cases these students are not granted state aid they will most likely drop out and become negative models to this society.

  7. In some essay we see strong arguments considering why the undocumented student should be provided with financial aid. Every single student needs the opportunity to achieve their educational goals. Like it was mentioned, in some of the essays some undocumented students were brought to the United States against their will. It was their parents who wanted them to achieve more than what they have accomplished. The governor Jerry Brown signed the Dream Act of Californian believing that students who achieve a higher education can benefit the nation. People may disagree because they believe giving financial aid to undocumented students might increase their taxes. It made be true, however once they achieve their degree and have a stable job they eventually are going to pay higher taxes. I believe the Dream Act of California will now improve undocumented students’ lives. The undocumented students can now try to pursue their dreams. With the dream act they can now stress less a focus in their education. They don’t have to worry about how they are going to pay the high cost of tuition. Students that are citizens should be thank full they are not facing discrimination because they are not illegal in the United States.

  8. I personally believe that undocumented immigrants should not be allowed to have access to higher education. While I do understand that America is the "Land of Freedom", there are certain limitations. Just like every law. Everyone has their right to speak, freedom, etc. but consequences arises when you cross the line. I believe undocumented immigrants should not have access to higher education because it is not fair to all the other people across the world that would want to come to the United States and be a citizen. There are people across the world that would love nothing more than to come to the U.S. to be a citizen and go to school here but can’t. Some people believe that undocumented immigrants only came here to get an education and to better their lives but how do you know for sure? There are many reasons why someone comes to the U.S. What happens if they get an education from the financial aid given to them by the Dream Act? What makes those people that are for undocumented immigrants to be sure they won't go back to their homeland once they graduate? Not everyone is as innocent as they look. Since the Dream Act has passed and it has given undocumented immigrants the opportunity to go to college, what about all the other citizens in California that cannot afford to pay for college? Who speaks for them? It is taking away U.S. citizens chances of going to college and graduating especially when the economy is bad. I don’t think anyone stated that undocumented students are being excluded because of the way they look or where they come from. Every country has their rules and limitations on things. Just because America is the Land of Freedom, it doesn’t mean anyone can come to the U.S. or will be granted freedom to do whatever they want. No one is also judging undocumented students by the way they look. If undocumented immigrants were being judge by the way they look, then how come over the past years they are being accepted to come to the U.S.? Last but not least, why did Governor Jerry Brown passed the Dream Act?

  9. I personally believe that the word “undocumented” should not be the obstacle between the student and his/her education. An education alone is very expensive for every student seeking a secondary education. Every other student is granted with government financial aid or cal grants, but these undocumented students are not. If they all want the same thing, and have made it this far, then why can’t they be treated the same? Undocumented students should receive some financial aid because they have worked as hard or harder than other students.

In the essay “THE DREAM ACT, a spark of faith” the authors mentions, “Those teens whom are children of undocumented parents do not have fault at all to be brought into the United States illegally, therefore they shouldn’t be held accountable for their parent’s actions. Why deny the education to someone who has lived in the United States almost all their life?” This argument is certainly strong because it is true that a big portion of the undocumented students here in California were brought here at a really young age without their consent. Therefore, I believe that it is not the students’ fault that they are here by “illegally.” They have lived here most of their lives and they consider themselves Americans. So why deny education to someone who has lived in America for so many years and that can bring positive things to this country. Undocumented students should have the opportunity to obtain financial aid. By obtaining financial aid these students will be able to obtain a higher education, become productive people and improve the standards of the United States.

  10. I believe that all students should have equal opportunity to receive financial aid. Because not only documented people are the only ones to affect the economy. With 11 to 12 million Undocumented immigrants living in the United States they play a major role in the economy. If these students don’t have equal opportunity to receive financial aid then they won’t be able to go to school. If they don’t go to school then more people will live in poverty, which will only worsen America’s economic status.
Governor Jerry Brown signed the Dream Act knowing that the top students of California will make a difference in the economy. As the economy stands now, we don’t know if it will get better or if it will only worsen. If we invest in the future, at least we’ll be able to look forward to the improvement of America’s economy. The US Constitution clearly states that, “We the people of the United States” and not “We the documented people of United States.” As a whole, let us make the economy better and not as individuals. Let us make other countries know that America is the land of opportunity.

  11. I strongly Believe that every student in the United States should be able to receive state aid to go to college if they have worked hard for it and deserve it. It should not matter if they are a citizen or not because in most cases it is not the fault of the child who cannot attend college because they didn't make the choice to come to the country. Undocumented immigrants play a huge role in our economy with working many jobs and if we gave them residency and a chance to pursue a higher education it would be an investment for the state of California because the state would be getting their money back every year with taxes. I believe Governor brown made the right choice by signing the Dream Act of California in 2011 because he is giving many undocumented students who work hard all their lives to go to college and pursue their dreams to get a good career and now that can happen with them getting help from the state financial aid. America is called the land of opportunity and with the Dream Act that is becoming a reality.

I strongerly believe that every student should be able to be granted financial aid if they have been in the U.S for a long time and have worked hard. because why would you turn down a student who wants to succeed in life and be someone in life. im glad that there has been granted the dream act for undocumented immigrant students.play a huge role in our economy with working many jobs and if we gave them residency and a chance to pursue a higher education it would be an investment for the state of California because the state would be getting their money back every year with taxes.

  13. Personally, documented or undumented students should be able to receive financial aid. If they have been living here for quite a while, and wanting to further their education. Why would the government stop them there? There are a lot of students wanting to receive a higher education, but can't because they don't have the money to pay for it and this is one of the reasons. They are undocumented. Everyone should be treated equally therefore I believe if the student shows that they are a hard worker and want to continue their education, they shouldn't get stopped.

I think every one deserves an equall oppurtunity for higher education. I think undocumented students should get FAFSA but not Cal Grants because Cal Grants are limted. Also every one deserves an equal oppurtunity because some undocumented students came here at a young age because there parents brought them here so it's not thier fault.

  15. I am disagree with those people who say that immigrants should not get any financial aid. In my opinion all the immigrants should be able to have access to financial aid in order to get a higher level of education. Almost every young immigrant that comes to United State of America has the same dream of graduating from high school and college. Because they want to fulfill their dreams and want to led happily rest of their lives. And if they are not given the same rights as all the other students then we are destroying their dreams which is totally unfair. Everyone in this world should have the opportunity to achieve their goals. So government should give them financial aid.

  16. I am undecided if undocumented immigrants should receive financial aid. My question is if they are willing to work for that aid. If they don't care much for school then they shouldn't be getting financial aid because other documented students can get help. Its not fair to give money for somebody who is not putting any effort toward their education.

  17. I agree with what Jasmine Gomez said because I think it is not fair that the undocumented immigrants are getting free money when the documented citizens aren't getting anything. The only was I see it acceptable for an immigrant to receive free money is that they have to prove to us that they really are going to work hard for that free money that they received. I totally agree with what Jasmine had to say, " Its not fair to give money for somebody who is not putting any effort toward their education" (Gomez). Show me progress and dedication then I won't hesitate a second on this topic.

  18. i believe they should fund higher education for undocument immigrants because it will benefit our society. they came with nothing so by providing this it will help them be able to support themselves later and maybe contribute to our economy

  19. This is a very hard subject for me to touch on but I believe that undocumented immigrants should receive access to financial aid from the government. A very good friend of mine from high school was an undocumented immigrant. Throughout high school he didn't try to pass his classes because he knew that he would not be able to go to college. He knew that there was no way he could afford it. It made me so remorseful toward this good friend because I realized that he could not receive the same kind of opportunities that I have been given since birth and continually take for granted.(Leah Chilton)

  20. I think that everyone should have access to financial aid, especially the undocumented immigrants. To undocumented immigrants, America is known as the land of opportunity. They come here to this country in search of a better life and to achieve the "American Dream". I think it is unfair if they are being intentionally rejected for financial aid because of their immigrantion status. I think that it is also terrible that undocumented immigrants don't have money to pay for a college education. A college education shouldn't just be a desire, it should be an option for the undocumented immigrants.

  21. I strongly disagree with The Dream Act! Why should we “documented” citizens give away our opportunity of education to people who are undocumented? As Edward Krigbaum suggested “if other countries gave us the opportunity as we gave to undocumented students, then it’s worth us helping them, but as of now this won’t happen.” I do believe that America is the “land of opportunity” but it’s not worth giving undocumented citizens a chance to get financial aid, while on the other hand, some documented students cannot even receive financial aid help!
And I just want to comment on one direct person who he stated that “The US Constitution clearly states that, “We the people of the United States” and not “We the documented people of United States.” As a whole, let us make the economy better and not as individuals. Let us make other countries know that America is the land of opportunity.” It is true “we are the people of the United States” and to make this economy better, “We the People” should help our own people before helping others, not giving others a hand, fix our problems before helping others!

  22. Undocumented immigrants shouldn't be allowed to receive financial aid. There are kids here in America that struggle their whole life to go into college but when it comes to the topic of money, they have nothing. I believe that citizens should have first priority over immigrants. If we are to go to Spain, Italy or Mexico, it's not like they would give us financial aid to go over and study at their schools. If they don't give us money then why should we?

  23. I definitely agree with those who are for the Dream Act. Undocumented immigrants come to the United States because we are said to be the land of opportunity, but without financial aid, what kind of opportunity do they have? Of course, America is limited on our financial costs, so I do agree that Cal Grants should not be awarded to them. We should at least give financial aid to undocumented immigrants because everyone deserves an equal opportunity.

  24. i completely disagree with the government helping undocumented immigrants with financial aid. yes, we all come here for an opportunity of a better life but at what cost? Kristen Olsen who was at the forum speaker claimed that the amount given to the the cal grants is so limited, that its not enough to go around to help undocumented immigrants. most of our citizens are dropping out due to little resource of help for their tuition. i believe that they should have access to schools and a better education but in a way that its does not take away from the sources that can help our citizens.

  25. I'm against the dream act, undocumented immigrants should not receive financial aid from the government. Why am I against? First of all because budget is limited, and I believe that citizens and legal residents should have priority to receive cal grants. Also, as illegal immigrants, they don't have any kind of rights or privileges (in the U.S.) stated on the constitution that they can claim, they know that just by crossing the border they already broke the law, and I don't think they should be rewarded for such an action.

However, I would like to comment on the words of Mr. Edward Krigbaum when he said that “if other countries gave us the opportunity as we gave to undocumented students, then it’s worth us helping them, but as of now this won’t happen.” Maybe the reason why that won't happen is because some countries like Mexico don't even have a financial aid program for students such as FAFSA. Students in Mexico pay for their own education, the only difference is that with the equivalent of one year of tuition cost at CSU STAN you could pay for your entire education over there. So, guess what Mr. Krigbaum? you can go to Mexico and I promise that you'll be equally rewarded by the government in that country, neither you or a legal Mexican resident are going to receive a single penny to pay for their education. The question again is "WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION?" haha.

  26. I think undocumented students should receive financial aid because there are a lot of people who were brought to this country as little kids and they know this country as their home. Theres also ecxeptional undocumented students who deserve the finacial aid, in my high school there was a guy who graduated as a baledictorian, and was an outstanding player of the football team, he was also accpected to berkly, sac state, davis, and a couple of other universities. Sadly he had to settle for the junior college because even though he got a couple of schoolships he wasnt able to accept other schoolarships nor receive financal aid due to his legal status. To me its just sad that our country wont lend a hand to ecxeptional students who deserve the help. We are not talking about helping criminas rob a bank! we are talking about kids with dreams who are trying to better themselves and long the way will better the country!

  27. I strongly support the Dream Act. It is a given opportunity for those who really seek for a higher education and pursue their American Dream. It is true that the budget is very limited but higher education should be a priority and the money given to those students will be a benefit for the whole country because we all are the future. Some illegal students were brought to this country with no fault of theirs and they deserve an opportunity to receive a financial help that would give them access to obtain a higher education. Illegal students are the ones that most value education because they know the high costs of coming to this contry to have a successful life. State's money should be invested in important issues like funding for college than wasting it on other things that only bring more conflict to this country.undocumented or not, students attending college are the ones that will benefit the nation economically. Everyone should be treated equally and should have same rights as everyone else.
